Parks and Recreation Board

Where a community becomes a neighborhood.

Ask people what they love about Winthrop Harbor and you will hear about the same things again and again - ballgames on a summer evening, a park bench with a view of the water, a festival that brings the whole village out, kids who grew up on these fields and now bring their own children back to them. Parks and recreation are not amenities. They are where a community actually meets itself.

Keeping those places vibrant takes residents who are willing to give their time, share their ideas, and think a few years ahead about what families here will need.

That is the work of the Recreation Board.

What the Board Does

The Recreation Board serves in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and Board of Trustees on all issues concerning recreation programs, parks, park buildings, athletic facilities, grounds and equipment. Board members review existing programs and facilities, consider ideas brought forward by residents and staff, and make recommendations to the Village's elected officials. Final decisions rest with the Board of Trustees, but the Recreation Board is where those conversations begin - and where a resident's suggestion can turn into a Village priority.

Membership

The Recreation Board consists of seven members appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the Board of Trustees, serving staggered three-year terms. One member serves as Chairperson and presides over meetings. Members serve on a voluntary basis and receive no compensation for their service.

Get Involved

All meetings of the Recreation Board are open to the public, and minutes are available for public inspection at the Village office. Residents with an interest in parks, youth and adult athletics, or community programming are especially encouraged to apply. Please contact the Village Office at 830 Sheridan Road, Winthrop Harbor, IL 60096.
