Responsible gun ownership starts with safe storage. Every year, unsecured firearms lead to preventable accidents, suicides, and thefts — and many of these tragedies involve children and teens who find a gun at home. Keeping firearms locked, unloaded, and out of reach is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your family and our community.
To help, the Winthrop Harbor Police Department is offering free gun locks to residents. To request one, email us or call the Police Department directly.

Safe Storage Best Practices
- Always store firearms unloaded and locked, with ammunition stored separately.
- Use a gun lock, lock box, or gun safe to secure all firearms in your home.
- Keep keys and combinations out of reach of children.
- Talk to your children about firearm safety — curiosity is natural, but access should never be.
- If you are storing a firearm for someone else, the same safety rules apply.
